The UMC has recently been experiencing some rough patches division partially stemming from it’s position on same sex attracted clergy in ministry and other LGBT issues, and the dynamic growth in more consertive countries outside of the US. While the UMC is leading in the headlines, it isn’t the only mainline Protestant denomination experiencing a decline in young adults entering the ministry. I answered the call to preach at the age of 12, was licensed to preach at 16, ordained in a local Baptist church at 20, re-obligated to the Itinerant ministry in the AME Church at 22.
While many millenial young adults are leaving the church and identifying as nones, the ones who are retaining their membership are not seeking leadership roles in ministry. I am not sure what can be done to change this trend, but the universal church must engage young adults by allowing them to share their gifts and ideas to local faith communities and perhaps we will see more entering ministry and church leadership.

I’ve been a fan of Chance the Rapper for some time largely because his raps are inspirational and engaging. Chance has been open about his faith and how it has affected his personal and professional life. While there have been a plethora of positive rappers who have integrated faith and inspiration into their lyrics, Chance is one of the few secular Hip Hop artists who while not strictly identifying as Christian, utilizes Christian and gospel elements into his lyrics.
This has been very successful. On a recent Ellen Show, Chance said, “Jesus teaches to care for your neighbor and care for people that aren’t necessarily your blood, but still a part of your body because we’re all humans,” he said. “That’s an impactful thing that I understood more as I got older.” While his words aren’t explicitly scripture chapter and verse, they are clearly influenced by the scriptures and the words of Jesus in the gospels of Matthew (7:12) and Luke (6:31). It’s no doubt that Chance the Rapper is an influencer and that his fans are aware of his character of faith and giving back. It is evident that they appreciate that part of him in addition to his fresh rhymes. In a day when people are craving authenticity in their influencers, his words may just be the impetus to some learning to love God through loving others and themselves in acts of kind selflessness that reflect the greatest fulfilment of God’s commands and laws.
An inter-racial couple was denied access to a local wedding venue because of the owner’s deep Christian race/ faith. It’s hard to believe this still exists but looking in Mississippi I’m finding that some beliefs are hard to let go.
